Fanciulla Del West opens her account at Southwell

Fanciulla Del West, a three-year-old daughter of Lope Y Fernandez out of Claba Di San Jore (Barathea), broke her maiden at Southwell for owner Lord Lloyd Webber.

Breaking slowly from the stalls, Fanciulla Del West settled at the rear of the field in this 1m 3f race. Coming round the bend into the home straight, she showed a great turn of foot as jockey George Downing weaved through runners to join the leaders heading into the final furlong. Battling hard, she edged in front in the final 100 yards to win by a head.
